Mission Blue is a global initiative created in response to Dr. Sylvia Earle's 2009 TED Prize wish to preserve our planet's oceans and associated marine life. Specifically, Mission Blue developed the concept of “Hope Spots,” designated areas that are critical to the health of our oceans and therefore must be preserved.
Decades of overfishing, pollution, climate change, and other human pressures threaten the fundamental nature of the ocean, and threaten the future of humankind. Mission Blue raises public awareness about critical ocean issues and inspires support for organizations, projects, and scientific expeditions that facilitate positive change for the ocean.
Presently, approximately 2 percent of the ocean is fully protected; five years ago, that number was around 1 percent. With concerted effort and passionate people, we can continue this positive trend and help create a global network of Hope Spots, the seeds of tomorrow’s healthy ocean.
